Correspondence Is Not a Term UGC Uses
The word persists in search habits but has no regulatory meaning. UGC recognises exactly two non-conventional modes under its 2020 regulations, Open and Distance Learning and Online, and what people call a correspondence MBA is an ODL programme in every case. Territorial Jurisdiction, the Difference Nobody Explains

In practice, that can restrict which states a distance programme may enroll from and where you would be expected to appear for examinations.
Online programmes carry no such constraint. A learner in Guwahati can enroll with a university in Tamil Nadu without any jurisdictional question arising. Recognition Is Identical, and That Is Written Down
Regulation 22 of the UGC (Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020 states that degrees awarded through ODL mode or online mode by recognised institutions are to be treated as equivalent to the corresponding degrees offered through conventional mode. There is no hierarchy between the two, and none between either and a campus degree.
That equivalence extends to employment. Degrees from approved institutions in either mode are accepted for central and state government roles and for competitive examinations, and recruitment authorities are not permitted to discriminate by mode of study. Cost follows the same pattern more often than people expect since IGNOU charges the same for its MBA whether taken through ODL or online mode.
What Applies to Both Equally
- Franchising ban: no university may deliver either mode through a franchise arrangement, and must retain complete ownership of the programme
- Prohibited subjects: engineering, medicine and allied fields, along with M.Phil and PhD research programmes, are barred from both modes
- Annual approval: recognition is granted session by session, and last year's status proves nothing about this year's
- Mandatory identifiers: a DEB-ID linked to an ABC-ID is required before admission can be confirmed
- Affiliated college rule: programmes offered only through a university's affiliated colleges cannot be delivered through these modes
- Admission deadlines: UGC sets a cut-off date each session for admitting students and reporting admission data
Choosing Between Them
The practical test is mobility and examination logistics rather than reputation. If you travel for work, live outside your university's jurisdiction, or want everything, including assessment, handled remotely, online mode removes friction that ODL retains. If you value structured contact sessions and have a learner support center nearby, ODL remains entirely respectable and often runs at lower cost.
One caution applies to both. Any provider promising a degree without examinations, accepting payment through an agent rather than an official portal, or enrolling students through a study center acting as a franchise is operating outside UGC rules.
