Why Is the Degree Never Called "Electrical Engineering Online"?
The naming difference is regulatory, not cosmetic. UGC's Distance Education Bureau lists engineering among the disciplines barred from online and distance modes, which is why an ordinary private university cannot advertise an online B.Tech in electrical engineering at all. BITS Pilani operates outside that restriction as a deemed-to-be university running Work Integrated Learning Programmes, and the IITs sit outside it as Institutes of National Importance under their own Act.
Both therefore build practical work into the format rather than removing it. Live classes run on weekends, virtual labs supply cloud access to design tools, and examinations happen in person at designated centers. If a provider promises a fully remote electrical engineering degree with no attendance obligation, that degree carries no recognised standing.
The naming matters practically when you apply. Searching for an electrical engineering programme by that title returns either unapproved providers or nothing at all, which pushes many applicants toward the wrong shortlist. Searching instead by the specialisation that matches your work, power systems, electronics, semiconductors or embedded design, surfaces the recognised options quickly.

Where Published Figures Disagree?
This is worth flagging before you budget. Third-party education portals frequently carry last cycle's numbers. One widely cited listing puts the B.Tech admission fee at Rs. 16,500 with a semester fee of Rs. 70,100, while the institute's own programme pages currently show Rs. 18,500 and Rs. 71,700. Another source gives a total B.Tech cost of Rs. 5,08,700 against the Rs. 5,21,900 published on the institute's page.
Specialisation counts drift the same way. One portal lists six B. Tech options and seven M.Tech options, where the official site shows seven and nineteen respectively. Platforms such as University Vidya are useful for building a shortlist quickly, but the institute's own admissions page should settle any figure you act on. The gaps are rarely large, though on a five lakh commitment they are not trivial either.
What the Fee Does Not Buy?
Campus placements are not included, and BITS states this directly rather than burying it. The reasoning is that participants already hold jobs, so progression is expected to happen inside a current role rather than through a placement drive. How much a degree shifts your salary will depend on your employer, your sector and how closely the coursework maps to the work you already do, so treat confident salary projections with caution.
Time is the second uncosted item. Contact classes run seven to eight hours a week on weekends, and the bachelor's route stretches across seven semesters, so the real commitment is three and a half years of weekends alongside a full-time job. Examination travel adds to that, since mid-term and end-term papers are written in person at centre locations that may not be in your city.
Eligibility is the other quiet filter. The bachelor's route needs a technical diploma and relevant employment, while the master's route needs an engineering or science degree. Applicants who meet neither are often better served looking at disciplines UGC does permit online. An Online MCA Course is open to any graduate and carries full UGC-DEB entitlement, which no online engineering programme can claim, and University Vidya lists entitled providers side by side. Whichever route you pick, check current entitlement on the UGC-DEB portal, since approval runs session by session.
